On Tuesday 12 October, representatives of the churches in Belgium and in Europe1 met with the Belgian EU-Presidency in Brussels. This meeting took place in the framework of Article 17 of the EU Treaty establishing a regular dialogue between churches and the EU. It also follows a well-established tradition of meetings between the churches and the rotating EU Council Presidencies. A joint commitemnt to combat poverty and social exclusion

"Do not deny justice to your poor people" is the title of a report presented today in the European Parliament by the main European Churches and their organisations. The text contains 14 political recommendations addressed to the EU and the Member States, which when implemented would ensure poverty in Europe would be drastically reduced. It was presented on the occasion of a conference that was opened by Mr Jerzy Buzek, President of the European Parliament, and attended by 150 participants.


Churches advocate ending the role of tactical nuclear weapons in NATO’s new Strategic Concept   - 28 September 2010
On 24 September, a delegation of the Church and Society Commission (CSC) of the Conference of European Churches (CEC) met with NATO Assistant Secretary General for Defence Policy and Planning, Dr. Jiří Šedivý, who was accompanied by Mr Guy B. Roberts, Deputy Assistant Secretary for WMD Policy, and Mr Robert F. Simmons, Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Security Cooperation and Partnership. The CSC delegation included representatives of the World Council of Churches and the Dutch ecumenical peace organization IKV Pax Christi.

The Church and Society Commission of the Conference of European Churches (CEC) has developed the contribution of the European churches for the European Year 2010.
